First Post

Welcome to my blog!  If you're reading this, you probably already know that I'm going to the Dominican Republic to serve with the Peace Corps for 27 months.  I leave on March 1 (only four days from now!) and I'll be gone until May 11 of 2013.

My field is ICT (Information and Computer Technology), so I'll be doing something with computers, but I don't yet know exactly what.  The major focus will be education of 'teachers, youth, and community organizations in low-income areas.'  They also want to start an adult literacy program, so I may get a chance to work on that.

I'll be living with a host family for the first 10 weeks (training), and then I'll move out to the location where I'll be working where I'll live with another family for three months.  After that, I'll move into my own place.

I would share more details, but I honestly don't know much more than that.  Part of the thrill of the Peace Corps is jumping into the great unknown and figuring it out while you're there, and that's very much what it feels like now.  I'll just jump in and see what happens!

I have to admit that I've never been good at writing consistently.  I'd love to be able to guarantee that I'll update this blog at least once a week, but I know that isn't likely, especially since I don't know what my life will look like over the next two years.  I do promise to post on a strict Latin American schedule: that means I'll post when I post!  I also need to fix up the decorations on this page, but I'll save that for another day.

La paz esté con ustedes,

-Austin
